Rates of Reaction

Rates of Reaction

Aim
The aim of this experiment is to investigate into the rates at which chemical reactions occur, and what variables affect them. For this investigation, I will be basing it around the chemical reaction between sodium thiosulphate and dilute hydrochloric acid. However, there are several variables that will need to be controlled to keep the experiment fair:

Variables

Temperature – Input variable – I will be altering the temperature several times to see how this will affect the rate of reaction. ...
Time – Outcome variable – The time it takes for the reaction to reach a specific point is known as the outcome variable; this is what I will be measuring and noting down each time. This will be measured by placing a cross under the reaction vessel; as the reaction takes place the solution turns cloudy. The stopwatch is started when the hydrochloric acid is poured into the reaction vessel (where the sodium thiosulphate is contained) and stopped when the cross beneath the reaction vessel is no longer visible. ... A cross drawn with a different pen, different colour or different thickness could affect the visibility as the reaction takes place, which would in turn affect the outcome variable (time). ... They will also view the cross below the reaction vessel from the same angle each time, otherwise once again this will affect the outcome variable.
