In John Okada’s No-No Boy, Ichiro Yamada, a young Japanese-American, tries to assume an American identity after answering ‘no’ to fight in the U.S. Army against Japan, therefore becoming a “no-no boy.” At the end of World War II, Ichiro is released from prison where he has been serving 2 years for his draft refusal. Ichiro returns home to Seattle, Washington, finding himself at odds with his pro-Japanese family and the Japanese-American community.
