Domestic Violence Against Men

Domestic Violence against men

Domestic violence towards men is a problem that is often overlooked. Many people believe that battered men do not exist. Most people cannot understand how a man, stronger than most women, could be abused by a woman. Men especially do not want to accept the notion of other men being beaten by women. Battered women have friends they can talk to after they realize their situation. Men, however, are less likely to talk to family members and friends because they are ashamed.

The female abusers, not unlike their male counterpart, uses verbal abuse to control her victim. She tells her victim on a daily basis that he is weak, ugly, fat, or a number of other insults. Most men, after hearing this for a long period of time, begin to believe these things. The abused male believes that noone else would ever want to be with him because he is weak, ugly, etc...

In recent years there has been a great increase in the support systems for domestic violence victims. There are shelters, support groups, and crisis centers. During my research I contacted twenty-two shelters and not even one of them take male victims. Most of them do not even allow male visitors. During my search for a support group for male victims I was actually laughed at by a domestic violence counselor.

It amazes me that there are almost no resources for battered men. There aren't as many abused men as women, but those who are need the same type of support as women. They need shelters, hot lines, and support groups. Until there is a system in place these men will remain afraid to come forward.
