My Turning Point

TURNING POINT…

Everyone has many potential turning points, which may significantly change their life. However, mostly they are both subjective and objective. It's like when you drive along the road, at certain point you have to make decision: following the short but rugged way, or the long but smooth way. Your situation is objective, but your decision is subjective. It's definitely no different than the turning point in real life; where the call of opportunity comes, and we are the people who answer it. Coming to America this senior high-school year is the most significant turning point in my life. It realizes my childhood dream of studying in America, brings me to deeper understanding of American society and culture as being a member of American family, opens up more challenges and opportunities to pursue higher education in famous university like MIT…
Since I was a child, I had dreamt of someday having a chance to study in America. That sounds simple with many people, but not with me or any other average Vietnamese family. After the Vietnam War, my nation has been struggled to fix the war damages and construct the economy. We have not so much industrial facilities, capital, and scientific knowledge to realize our dream. Instead, Vietnamese are the ones who are not only good at studying math and science, but also hard working, determinate. They come to different civilized nations to grasp the scientific knowledge to help the nation's industrialization. Inherited from this spirit and tradition; from the time I was conscious of my mind, I always try to be studious, and improve my knowledge day after day. Every time the TV showed gorgeous images and lives in other nations, I became so jealous and kept considering: how and when my nation, my people get a better, more comfortable life like this. Later, I understood that becoming the ones who made it possible is better than questioning about or waiting for it. I get higher and higher...
