Women in the mass media
In the February 26th workshop in the De Carli Room of the MU entitled “Images of Women of Color in the Mass Media”, I participated in a discussion about the extent to which media images of women of color affect my and societies viewpoint on women of color. The workshop focused specifically on three examples of women of color in mass media; music videos by the pop group TLC and Christina Aguilera, and a stand up comedy skit by Margaret Cho. Each of these examples of women of color in the media clearly depict the affects of media on women, by either recognizing and bringing to light these images, or acting as an example of media representation of women of color. The music video of the hit song “Unpretty” by TLC depicts the lives of many women of color, showing how each are differently negatively touched by the media. The video depicts two different women who either believe to have, or do have eating disorders.
