In Reginald Mckinght’s, "The Kind of Light That Shines on Texas," Clint sets a date with his most feared enemy, "Oak Tree" Oakley. The day that was destined to come, the day where Oakley would finally get his chance at Clint, was interrupted by Marvin. The question is why Marvin did what he did? Throughout the story Marvin, looked down on by Clint, kept to himself in strange ways. He spent his class time spitting on his arm and sleeping. Marvin knew he was not only belittled by the white kids but also by the black kids, there only being two or three others. Does Marvin do what he does because he sees Clint as a friend or because he fights back against racism.
