English As the Ofiicial Language

The big controversy over English as the official language of the United States is a heated one. There are many different opinions about if there is should in fact be an official language in a country that promotes freedom of speech. There are many pros of having one declared language, an example would be unity. We as people would speak the same language which would bring us closer together. Making English the official language does not mean that our individuality has to die but like what Richard Rodriguez is saying that our individuality comes out when you speak the same language as everyone else. So by making English the official language it does not hinder other languages but just makes one universal language that we all speak so no one is an outsider. Individuality is something which is unique to each individual person; it can not be lost or gained through language. What make us, us are us, not just our language, religion, or race but everything combined.
