Samuel, rather atypical to this situation, is a suspicious character, because he is a foreigner and an Irishman, as though a farmer's wife might try and commit an affair with him. He was a farmer, and not an "educated" man, like the Delmars or the Thornes, even though Samuel has read more of the books from the Delmar's library than the Delmars had. Samuel is a practical man and frowns on needless Artsy Fartsy and draws only plans of iron or wood, but sometimes with a few little faces.
