Kurtz is clearly characterized as a morally “hollow” man who has found exploitation and fraud as a way of life. Before one begins to comb through Heart of Darkness in search of libelous details with which to incriminate Kurtz, one must establish the charges that should be brought against Kurtz. ... I am not a lawyer nor do I have any interest of ever being one, so I am positive that there may be many other accusations that may be brought against Kurtz. ...
Kurtz exploited the African natives. How did Kurtz do this? Kurtz did not arrive at the station to change the culture of the natives; Kurtz went to the Congo to exterminate the culture of the natives and implement the industrialized culture of 20th century Europe. From the beginning, Kurtz had plans to exert himself over the natives; he did not plan on compromising. Even if Kurtz had had the benevolent intentions of establishing this “enlightened” culture for the benefit of the natives, it obviously turned out as a bigger benefit for himself and his company.
