Courtly Love is an extremely popular them in novels and was mostly practiced in the Medieval ages. It was a set of guide lines that shood be followed when dealing with the opposite sex. Courtly love can mean a variety of things, from adultery to seduction. The meaning of courtly love is complex in it’s own way. First, C. S. Lewis defined courtly love as "Humility, Courtesy, Adultery, and the Religion of Love." Courtly love could mean many different things, for it is a very broad topic. Some of the examples are even the exact opposite of each other. For example courtesy and adultery are usually not used together in the same sentence. Next, Andreas Capellanus, the writer of De Amore, the most influential handbook on love written in the Middle Ages, was quoted saying that courtly love was the religion of love. How to study the love between two beings, and what is proper and what isn’t. Andreas was also said, “love ennobled the lover and made him a better knight.
