Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter
The Scarlet Letter was an interesting book. It showed a lot about how differently people lived back then. One of the main things it shows is what it is like to live as an outcast in their society. This was a brutal life style to live by, but there were also things I learned about that time period from reading the book. I learned that there was still a strong belief in witches and wizardry at the time, the way in which clothing was produced, and the role that ministers played in the community.
The definition of outcast in the dictionary is; "one that is cast out or refused acceptance (as by society)". The outcast in The Scarlet Letter was Hester. She had made a mistake and would never be the same after that. After making this mistake she would have to wear a letter A on her chest for the rest of her life. This letter A showed that she had committed adultery. By wearing this letter she was recognized as an outcast at all times. There was no way people would forget about it over time because she is always wearing the letter. I feel that there always has to be some type of outcast in a society. Without Hester many people would have to go searching for someone else in the community to gang up on. The outcast in society isn't a role to be very proud of but someone has to do it.
The belief in witches and wizardry in the book gave the book an old time type of fairy tale feel. With everyone saying how someone might be a witch or the devil, made the book seem more fictional. But I shouldn't have jumped to conclusions so fast. After doing some research, I found that witches and...
