In the book The Hip Hop Generation, Kitwana defines this “generation” as anyone born between 1965 and 1984. ... The deaths of these individuals led to a revolution in the hip hop world, one where the people of this generation became “conscious of (their) arrival. ... This was a stepping stone for the hip hop community because it gave young Blacks the spotlight and more visibility.
However, Kitwana points out that there are many negative issues that the hip hop generation is forced to deal with. ... Another issue that has been detrimental to the hip hop generation is the rise of AIDS. ... ” (Kitwana, 21)
There are many people in hip hop culture who are using hip hop music as a mobilizer and political force. One of the artists who uses his music to inspire and confront political issues is Nas. ... ” (Kitwana, 21) Nas is giving young Black youth a voice, and raising political issues such as the problem of unemployment in the Black community. Rappers with political lyrics are very influential to the hip hop generation.
