The Scariest Day of My Life
On Friday January 26, 2002, the day had started like any other day. My son Dustin had spent the night before with my aunt. Later on that day, I received a phone call and learned Dustin needed to go to the doctor. I then called the doctor, and they were booked for the rest of the day. I then went and picked him up and took him to the Self Express Care Center. This weekend was about to be one that I would never forget.
We had been sitting in the Express Care Center for about fifteen minutes before they called us back to see the doctor. The doctor had told us Dustin just had a viral cold and an ear infection. We then went and had his prescriptions filled and went home. He acted like he was feeling better the next day, which was Saturday. He was up playing with his toys and watching cartoons, so that was a plus.
The next day, we awoke and Dustin was running a fever, so I gave him some fever reducer. That seemed to bring his fever down a little, but not like it should have. A few hours past, by, and he was getting worse. He started throwing up white foam like substance, and coughing every breath. I decided to take him to the Emergency Room and have a different doctor examine him.
We sat in the lobby at the hospital about fifteen minutes before they called us back. Once we were in the triage office, the nurse took his temperature and oxygen saturation. His temperature was about 103.00, and his oxygen saturation was 89, which is not good. The nurse then took us to the critical care part of the Emergency Room. I knew Dustin was really sicker than I thought. We were in the room about five minutes, and then the doctor came in and listened to his breathing, and told me he would be staying the night for observation. Another nurse came in and put an IV in and started antibiotics. She also drew four tubes of blood. This was really getting to me because my son was lying there scared to death...
