The lack of morals in society is shown when Echion is talking about the “good” things to look forward to, such as a really good 3-day show of a bunch of good gladiators that looks to be really bloody—no care for the loss of life.
Petronius’ accusation of a lack of any spirituality in his society is shown when Trimalchio talks about farting whenever it pleases him: “This is one thing even God Almighty can’t object to…I don’t object to people doing what suits them even in the middle of dinner…” The point of this remark by the author is not to talk about farting, but about how Trimalchio—and the rest of society—liked to do whatever was pleasing with no thought to if a higher being should care.
