How American Pastimes Have Affected Our Communities In the 1930’s, my grandfather was a teenager. He often told stories of the many pastimes which required teamwork and encouraged socialization within the community. On the contrary, Americans today display less social skills than ever. The ways in which we spend our leisure time have contributed to this condition because they require increasingly less personal interaction. The youth of my grandfather’s generation would often gather on Saturdays at the nearest open field to play baseball. All available players were divided into two teams. Less skillful players had to deal with the pain of always being picked last or being on the losing team.
