Harmful Effects of Second Hand Smoke Second hand smoke, the smoke inhaled from other people’s cigarettes, pipes, or cigars, causes 53,000 deaths a year, and is the third largest preventable cause of death in the United States. Smoking in public should be prohibited because it causes many negative effects such as emphazyma, asthma attacks, and increased risk of lung and other forms of cancer, to those who choose not to harm their body with smoking. Second hand smoke is also commonly referred to as environmental tobacco smoke, or passive smoke. The smoke that comes off the end of the cigarette, or exhaled by a smoker, is made up of over 4,000 substances.
