Opening Statement Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, we are gathered here today to hear arguments on the matter of the contract between this man, Dr. Faustus, and my client, Lucifer. ... You will see two very different pictures of Dr. Faustus painted here today. ... Dr. Faustus would have you believe that he is somehow an innocent--merely a hapless victim in all of this. ... I personally have my doubts that Faustus ever had any intention of honoring this contract. ... He has overlooked several occasions where Faustus all but betrayed him in favor of competing factions. And he has even taken it upon himself on occasion to personally step in replacing his proxy, Mephistopholis, to make sure that Faustus was happy with his contract. ... It will now be up to you to decide whether my client has, in some obscure fashion, failed in his contractual obligations in such a way that Faustus should have just cause to break their contract, or if Faustus complaints are immaterial and not suitable grounds for contract termination. ... The defense would have you believe that Faustus lacked the knowledge to understand exactly how deep the consequences of his actions would be.
