WWI
Even before the 1900’s European Countries struggled with conflicts over power, trade. colonies and military power. In order to maintain a balance of power countries formed alliance’s. In 1914 the assignation of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria by a Serbian nationalist sparked what was to be WW1 which did not end until 1918. Austria-Hungary retaliated on Serbia and Russia came to Serbia’s defense. Germany declared war on Russia and France and invaded Belgium in order to attack France. Other countries in the alliances followed. The major combatants in WW1 were the Central Powers-Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire(Turkey)&Bulgaria and Italy for a short time but then switched to the Allies.
