Internet censoring can be done in several different ways. The first is that you can censor a network by blocking the same sites for every person who connects to it. Another way is to block certain people from select sites. Using the second way, it is possible to block a group of people out of the whole network to be censored or to not be censored.
At OES does not have to censor anything from the Internet by law, because the school does not receive any money from the government. So the question asked is why does the school censor the same sites for every computer and every person on this network. The school censors sites with material that is unfit for the students. Those are sites which contain such material as pornography, games, and violence. The school should censor different things for different age groups of people connected to the network. For lower schoolers, the school should filter more than what they would filter for upper or middles schoolers, or faculty. There are many times when an upper school student is working on a project, and access to a site that may be necessary to the assignment is blocked because the school does not want the younger people to be able to get on to it. Again, games should not be blocked for the older students, while they should for the younger. This is because the students in upper school have much more free time than the lowers school students, and are more responsible with the time that they have.

Another argument against censored sites is, why filter anything? Children should learn to be responsible, and not always be completely sheltered from the world. "The things on the Internet that the school censors are just as bad as going to downtown Portland" (John King).
