Essay During the late 1800,s and early 1900’s the US seized a place of dominance in world affairs. During the mid to late 1800’s the US began practicing imperialism (the practice of controlling territories outside the US. Imperialism can mean using force to make other countries do what the US wants or by sizing colonies overseas. There were several reasons why the US thought this was a good policy: As the US industrialized it could use colonies as new markets to sell products to. 2. The US could take raw materials and natural resources from the colonies such as oil, natural gas, coal, and timber. 3. The US could establish Military bases in colonies to increase defense 4. Other industrialized countries like Britain, France, Germany, and Russia already practiced Imp. And might grow stronger than the US if the US did not. 5. Some American writers encouraged IMP in books. Josiah Strong wrote “ Our Country” in which he claimed the US could improve area we take over. Alfred Mahan wrote Influence of Sea Power on history in which he stated that all great countries for the past had powerful Navy’s and takes over places. 6. Some Us Christians supported IMP as a chance for missionary activity 7. Some believed in Social Darwinism that the most powerful and fit countries had a right to dominate weaker countries by nature.
