Compare and Contrast the Dystopian Presentation of the Future Expressed in Orwells’ “Nineteen Eight Four” and Huxleys’ “Brave New World”. George Orwell and Aldus Huxley create two very different dystopian visions for the future. In Nineteen Eighty-Four, Orwells’ shocking combination of military overthrow, rigorous control and communal ignorance combine in the dank, seething future London (“Oceania”). ... In Nineteen Eighty-Four, we follow the life of Winston Smith, a deeply depressed party member of the Ministry of Truth. ... In “Nineteen Eighty-Four” freedom is objectified in the glass dome and the “Golden Country”, the image of the corral isolated from the filth of the outside world plays on Winston’s mind throughout the novel. ... The women of Brave New World are encouraged to be overly promiscuous and to seek as many sexual partners as possible and the DHC has strictly ruled out long term relationships “four months of Henry Foster, without having another man – why he’d be furious if he knew…have someone else from time to time, that’s all”. ... The people of Nineteen Eighty-Four are much more practically dressed. ... This may seem a strange idea but the ideal women of Nineteen Eighty Four wear the sash of the anti-sex league proudly around their waist while those of Brave New World wear “morocco-surrogate cartridge belt, bulging…with the regulation supply of contraceptives”. These two ideas are of a stark contrast and help to illustrate the two opposing views of sex within the society of both novels. ... The main reason is fear – the people of nineteen eighty four are without a doubt living in fear of their own lives; this problem is caused by their segregation and isolation.
