The Chemistry of Drugsby: Sarah Robinson

Drugs play a very influential role in the world today. They affect the lives of people all over the world. There are numerous drugs that people use to change their moods and emotional states, but they cause one of two general effects. Drugs either impact the limbic system, or alter the actions of neurotransmitters. The limbic system is the part of the brain that controls memory, pain, pleasure, rage, affection, sexual interest, fear, and sorrow. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that are responsible for transmitting signals throughout the nervous system. Drugs are usually put into two categories, they are either classified as stimulants or depressants. Stimulants increase the chances of signal transmission throughout the nervous system, and depressants decrease these chances. This report focuses on the many types of drugs that are most popular today.
