Benjamin Banneker, the grandson of an English servant and a slave from Africa, and the son of freed slaves, was born in Maryland on November 9, 1731. Banneker born into a family of free blacks, grew up on his family’s farm with his siblings. Banneker along with his siblings were educated by their grandmother until a Quaker school teacher moved to the valley. There in the valley the teacher started up a school, which Benjamin attended.
