Antecedent Interventions
Educators have long recognized that behavior difficulties can keep students from Performing successfully in class. Given the rise in the number and severity of student Behavior problems, teachers recognize that a need exists for specially designed Intervention programs to address these behavior problems and replace them with new social, communication, and independence building skills. The goal is to find an appropriate behavior that is easy, or easier, for the student to engage in than the problem behavior. Understanding why a certain student engages in problem behavior can help a teacher discover how to teach the student a more desirable way to achieve the same outcome. For an example, the student may engage in the inappropriate behavior to escape or avoid a situation for which he lacks the appropriate skill, and because he lacks the appropriate skill, truly believes this behavior is effective in getting what he wants or needs.
