New England Colonies Compare Contrasted to the Chesapeake Colonies

These colonies can be compared and contrasted through social, economical, and political conditions. In the Chesapeake colonies life was rough for the early settlers there. Diseases like Malaria, dysentery, and typhoid plagued the settlers of the Chesapeake and life was hard to survive past the age of twenty. Immigrants came in single packs and marriage to a woman was very rare for a male due the small number of females in these colonies. Because of this small number of women, the birthrate in these colonies was very low. It seemed the only way the Chesapeake region could grow was if more immigrants came over. There was no pattern to the expansion of the Chesapeake settlement and usually planters who took the initiative themselves settled towns. Unlike Chesapeake colonies, the New England colonies were strong and prosperous. Diseases were few and far between in these colonies and the average person lived to see seventy years of age.
