Renaissance Art
While walking through the magnificent “European Paintings” gallery of the wondrous Metropolitan Museum of Art, we viewed many of the great paintings that we studied in class, as well as others which interested us even more in the Renaissance art. ... These works of art were astonishing and displayed the true essence of Renaissance art. Starting with the work done by Pieter de Hooch, The Visit showed us the ideals of the Dutch High Renaissance. ... The clothing shows that the subjects seem to be of the middle-upper class, reiterating the renaissance secularism. Pieter de Hooch seems to be displaying the everyday life of High Renaissance society. Out of the four major themes of the Renaissance that were discussed, it seems that this painting relates to the theme of “Middle Class.” Although this painting was not too interesting visually, it depicts the everyday life of the Renaissance middle class. ... In this piece of High Renaissance art, we observed the goddess Venus, lying nonchalantly on what appeared to be a velvet blanket. ... Out of the four distinct Renaissance themes, we believe that this painting fits into the “Family” category due to the relation of Cupid and Venus and the symbolism of marriage throughout the painting.
