Johnny changes throughout the story because of events that occur. In the beginning Johnny is immature, but through the next two years Johnny becomes caring and humble. When Johnny burns his hand it destroys his ego and self-esteem, this was one big step towards his maturity. Cilla plays a big part in Johnny’s change. ... Dove was different in the end of the book also, and his difference changed Johnny. They became friends, and he showed Johnny that he was mature enough to put the past behind him and Johnny should be too. Dove changed Johnny while they were both still working for the Laphams. Although Dove only meant to teach Johnny a lesson, it ended Johnny’s silversmith career and his pride. After Johnny burned his hand he was no longer able to work in the shop.
