The majority of the patients there had dementia and as I was still young I had never come across this illness before. It was my first day and the charge nurse gave me the duty of entertaining Mrs Smith who ironically was a retired ward sister who suffered from senile dementia. ... On introduction to Mrs Smith I initially thought that there was no evidence of confusion but as the conversation went on I found that her short-term memory was very poor almost to the point of none at all.
