Vygotsky ‘s theory is based upon three key components. The first is to understand the developmental history of an individual. This requires the understanding of the historical evolution of the individual’s culture. This requires an understanding of the phylogenetic evolution of the individual’s species. In simpler terms, the three levels are ontogenetic, historical, and phylogenetic. These are all understood as developmental in nature. An understanding of all three levels is necessary to understand the process of development. Vygotsky’s theory refers to “genetic” concepts. Vygotsky stated that “all mental function is first interpsychological and then becomes intrapsychological.” This statement means that only when a child is involved with “culturally defined practices,” they are capable of understanding their surroundings.
