Sigmund Freud
There are some people who travel the entire passage of life never experiencing the miracle of true friendship. Throughout our entire lives we meet countless individuals, most of whom we have no recollection of. There are those though, who touch our hearts and sometimes our souls in ways that their memories stain our lives forever. I have met two such individuals who have affected my life in such a way. Michelle and Rhoda, each of their friendships has proven to be invaluable to me over the years, yet in different ways that reflect their individual personalities; personalities that are different as night is from day. The father of psychology, Sigmund Freud put forth the three aspects of human personality-id, ego and the superego. The id is supposed to be our desire for unrestrained passion whereas the superego represents the conscience that lies within each individual. The ego is the balance between the two. Each one of Freud’s personality type can be seen prevalent in each of the three of us. Rhoda is the id. She reminds one of a wild mustang with no inhibitions, intimidated by nothing and no one. Michelle is the superego, always concerned and mindful of what is the right thing to do. Although I do not see myself as either the id or the superego or even the ego, there are times I feel as if I was meant to be the balance between their opposing personalities. Looking back now, I remember my very different first impressions of them both.
