I have always thought that welfare and other governmental benefitswere meant for the poor. But, the rich benefit more from public assistance and governmental benefits in the United States today. In 1994, 29 percent of families with incomes of at least $150,000 received governmental benefits averaging more than $16,000 through programs such as Social Security. Families with incomes below $10,000, however, received benefits averaging less than $8,000 (C&O, 1998:273,4). This shows that the people with less need of aid are receiving twice as much as the people who are living in extreme poverty. The way the government distributes their funds is This makes me wonder how poor families survive on that much money. Many poor families manage by cutting back on food, jeopardizing their health and the development of their children, or by living in substandard and sometimes dangerous housing.
