A Trace Though The History Of Hip-Hop
A Trace Through Rap History
Throughout time the style of music has changed, but there are certain characteristics that have stayed the same. In rap music, the style of the rap music has changed, but the incidents and problems that arise have been constant throughout time. By tracing rap through history a person becomes able to see that much has not changed.
Rap music first started from poetry. In the black community many blacks would recite poetry to express their feelings of the hatred that was directed toward the blacks at the time. At first blacks would recite poetry only, but they felt that just poetry alone did not fully capture the struggle, resistance, righteousness, exploitation, and creativity in Black America. Rap music fused poetry and jazz in a way to best represent the black society.
Rap music began in the early 1970's. The first rap artists can be traced, most directly, to a group known as the Last Poets. One of the members of the group, who went by the name of "Lightening Rod" decided to venture on his own, so he separated from the group. Lightening Rod along with James Brown are credited for laying the foundation for rap. Another artist by the name of Herc also helped to plant the seed of rap to make it into the gigantic tree that it is today. Herc was a master at mixing and fading records. He did this without missing a beat. The most incredible thing was that he did all of this by ear. Herc was the first D.J. to use the large and loud speakers used at concerts today. At the time of invention, it was in no way strange to see these large speakers, called Herculoids, at any of Herc's concerts. Another D.J., an electrical genius...
