"The Turner Prize"
In this essay I intend to explore what the Turner Prize means personally to me and also defend the
Turner Prize as a vital part of British culture. Despite the media criticism inherent in the comment "is it
Art" ?" I intend to justify that it is "art".
The Turner Prize was started in 1984 and each year a different jury is selected which includes a British
curator, a British critic, an overseas curator and a representative of the patrons; also the Tate director
as chair man. A very limited jury, in view of the fact that some of the curators may have already hosted
one of the applicants work in their gallery. The initial prize money was £10,000, a not- insignificant sum
to young artists wanting to develop their work further.
In 1987,the company Derail Brougham Lambert became sponsors of the prize and the following year a
new statement was issued. "£10,000 prize is awarded to an artist for outstanding contribution to Art in
Britain in the year ending 31st July 1988". When this sponsorship finished in 1989,the prize was put on
hold the following year while they found a new sponsorship.
In 1991 the Turner prize was first shown on Channel Four who then took over the sponsorship offering
£20,000 in prize money. Channel four sees it as "a way to honour the achievements of an outstanding
artist, living and working in Britain" The aim of the Turner prize exhibition at Tate Britain is to enable
members of the public to see, find out more about, and discuss the work. The Turner prize has become
a prestigious award in the world of contemporary art.
In 2000, Wolfgang Tillman won the Turner prize I personally loved another contender Tomoko
