"Single-Gender Concept Entering Public Schools"

In a recent article found in the Houston Chronicle from June 16th, Melanie Markley writes about Texas' decision to open single-gender public schools. It is a concept that offers a supplementary means of teaching and defies the norm of the conventional co-ed educational systems in public schools. The article primarily serves to point out the many reasons as to why this may be beneficial to students as opposed to having co-ed public schools as Texas has practiced thus far. Through interviews and facts from other public schools around the nation that have already implemented this system, the reader is clearly able to see the positive as well as some of the negative aspects to having single-gender public schools.
The article starts out with stating facts about other single-gender public schools that have recently emerged around the nation. The first example is of a school in Chicago. The author, upon visiting an all-girls public school, interviews many young students about their experience of being in school without boys. As per the interview, many of the young girls replied that they enjoyed being in school without boys for several reasons. Firstly, they would not be teased constantly since the boys have not been in school with them, and second, they are not afraid to be wrong (give the wrong answers to questions in class) because the boys are not there to make fun of them. One young girl pointed out that if the wrong answer is indeed given, girls (as opposed to boys) are encouraging and say things like, " you'll do better next time". The article proceeds to point out that Houston will very soon be joining in this new trend of single-gender public schooling. Houston will open it's first all boys charter school in the fall of this year in the Houston Independent School District which will consist of sixth, seventh and eight graders. Classes will be administered from spare classrooms at HISD's Dodson Elementary and will later move to Wheeler Avenue...
