"Rainman"

The movie Rainman was about an exotic car dealer named Charlie Babbitt, played by Tom Cruise, who finds out after his fathers death, that he has a brother, Raymond Babbitt, played by Dustin Hoffman. Charlie needs the money from his fathers will to bring his dying car business from going out of business. Charlie realizes from his fathers lawyers that he has not inherited any of his fathers money, and that all the money his father had, three million dollars, is going to the care of his brother, who was presently staying at a home for people with disorders.
Charlie decides to "kidnap" his brother in return for half of the three million dollars. He then realizes that his brother is more than just "ransom" and connects with his brother in the end.
What made it so hard for Charlie during the time he spent with his brother is that Raymond was an autistic savant. According to the DSM IV a person is diagnosed as being autistic if they suffer from:
Qualitative impairment in social interaction
Qualitative impairment in communication
Restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior, interests, and activities.
The DSM states that to be diagnosed an individual must have a total of six (or more) items from 1,2, and 3, with at least two from 1, and one each from 2 and 3.
In accordance with (1), Qualitative impairment in social interaction, Raymond has a failure in developing peer relationship appropriate to developmental level. This was apparent when the Vern, the guy that took care of him for a number of years said that if he left, Raymond would not even know he was gone. Also when he was leaving in the train, there were no goodbye on his part, he was only thinking of catching his show on television.
Raymond also suffered from the lack of spontaneous seeking to share enjoyment, interests, or achievements with other people. This is prime when Charlie was showing Raymond how to dance and after he had...
