A & P

A & P Preciš

Sammy, an A & P checkout clerk from a small suburb outside of

Boston, observes three young girls in bathing suits as they come in. Sammy

watches each of the girls as they look around the store, but there is one

that catches his attention right as they walk in. Sammy vividly describes the

young girl as ‘chunky,’ with a good tan. He is also baffled because none of

the girls were wearing shoes. By Sammy puting intense focus on the young,

sun-kissed girl, it diverts his attention from ringing up items for a woman

which ends up giving him the ‘cold-shoulder.’

girl, but quite enough to be beautiful. He puts enormous detail in describing

her long, frizzy hair, her long neck, and the sunburns under her eyes. The

last girl he describes is the one he thinks is the leader of the three girls, and

even calls her ‘the queen’(quoted in A&P by Updike). Sammy describes her

as being very confident, trying to teach the other girls to be like her.

Sammy goes into detail about ‘the queen’ concerning the color of her

bathing suit, how her straps are pulled down, the style of her hair, and the

way she walks, also seeming to be very impressed by her.

Sammy,...
