A Memory of White
I woke up with a startle and realised I am in Johannesburg. ‘I remembered something from the TV last night’. I closed my eyes again as I recollected childhood memories.
I was 10 years old and had woken up suddenly that wintry Sunday morning. I leapt out of my cosy, warm bed anxious after the weather report last night. Excitedly, I pulled open the curtains. I smiled to myself as I gazed at the white blanket dominating the garden. My breath misted as I stood against the window pane. It was snowing!
I rushed to my parents’ room and shook them up as I cried enthusiastically
“Look! It’s snowing!” I rummaged around the wardrobe and took out my clothes. I grabbed my scarf as I raced out into the cold. I could feel the cold against my face. There was a soft silence. I stuck out my tongue and embraced the snow with my hands outstretched. I closed my eyes. The cold snowflakes melted on my tongue.
I raced to the lawn gathering all the snow I could get. As I gathered it, my gloves began to get wet with the cold snow. I yelled out to my dad to hurry up. I piled mounds of snow together. As my dad approached, I told him to make the body of the snowman. I noticed what a mess he was creating. He never did know how to make a snowman. Once the snowman was built he was still missing a few body parts. I used branches for his arms, coal pieces for his eyes and nose. It was very messy as I viewed my work.
The tranquility was broken by a flying snowball. I turned to my father and saw that look. This was going to be dirty fight. I picked up a large snowball and aimed it at my dad. It was a poor shot. He laughed at my loss and threw another at me. I cried in defeat from the cold ice that slid down my back. I got up, looked him in the eye and whispered to myself, “I will get you!”. I hit him right on the head. It was glorious. Suddenly, a snowball came flying at my dad. I...
