"Making Toys For Children Too Mature For Most Toys"
This week in Manhattan, New York, the annual American International Toy Fair is being held. Top toy makers from all around the country have gathered to showcase their toys that will either be out on the market soon. Toy producers are having problems finding the right toys that appeal to today's maturing eight year olds, the simple, yet satisfying He-Man and Ninja Turtles action figures of my day are no longer the in product on the market. With each passing year toys have become more increasingly advanced.
It seems today that the popular toys are pop-music-themed toys, such as a Britney Spears or an N Sync look alike toy. Last year alone 300 million dollars was spent on pop-music-themed toys, as opposed to five years ago when basically nothing was spent in the same area. This is my guess as to why music sales have not plummeted more after the invention of the cd burner and mp3 sharing sites. All of this focus on pop music is definitely helping sales. After reading this article I found out about some very advanced toys such as karaoke machines, which allow you to sing along with your favorite artist, and even make your own videos with a combination karaoke machine and video camera called VJ Starz. There is also a video game out now for Play Station 2 where you compete as a backup dancer in music videos.
Kids 14 and younger make up 10% of all record sales. This is probably the reason why Spears and N Sync sell so many records. If you ever watch Total Request Live on MTV (which I don't) you'll notice that the majority of the songs being requested by the viewers are groups like Britney Spears and all of those annoying boy bands. All the callers are just young teenage girls with nothing better to do than mimic their favorite artists on TV, it's really sad.
