A Look At Belgium
Belgium
Belgium is a small country in Northern Europe. Belgium is centrally located, practically next door to major cities such as London, Paris, and Amsterdam. It is separated into three regions, which are the three different language communities. Theses regions all have a lot of self rule and are, the Flanders in the north who speak Dutch, the Wallonia, in the south who speak French, and the capitol district of Brussels, who speak German. Although the major language of the capitol is German, Belgium recognizes its two major languages as Dutch and French.
You would think that with such obvious division within the country there would be many problems with the national government, which is a democratic parliament with a constitutional monarchy. Fortunately, the government makes sure that the three regions are all equally represented. Due to the constitution, adopted in 1831, the monarch is the head of state. Executive power is bestowed upon the Prime Minister, who heads up the government, and the Council of Ministers. The Council of Ministers has an equal number of Flanders and Wallons. The Belgian Parliament has two houses, the chamber of Representatives and the Senate. The people directly elect the Chamber, and the Senate is directly elected, chosen by other members of the senate, or chosen by the provincial council. The three regions have their own governments that act like state governments. They have their own Prime Minister, Council of Ministers, and Parliament. They all have the power to control any regional matters.
Belgium is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with a population of 10,248,000. Therefore, it would make sense that most Belgians live in cities, which allows Belgium to serve as an international center for economic activity.
