PROPERTIES OF WAVES
LONGITUDINAL AND TRANSVERSE WAVES HAVE FIVE PROPERTIES IN COMMON. ALL WAVES :
· TRAVEL ALONG STRAIGHT LINES,
· CAN BE REFLECTED,
· CAN BE REFRACTED,
· UNDERGO DIFFRACTION AND IF TWO DIFFRACTED WAVES OVERLAP,
AN INTERFERENCE PATTERN IS PRODUCED
PROPERTIES OF LIGHT
· LIGHT TRAVELS ALONG A STRAIGHT LINE,
· LIGHT CAN BE REFLECTED,
· LIGHT CAN BE REFRACTED,
· AND THROUGH A TRIANGULAR PRISM WHITE LIGHT COULD BE SPLIT UP INTO ITS VARIOUS COLOURS AND A SPECTRUM WAS FORMED.
A CONCLUSION CAN BE MADE THAT : LIGHT HAS WAVE PROPERTIES
Diffraction
DIFFRACTION IS THE FANNING OUT OF A WAVE AS IT PASSES OVER AN EDGE OR THROUGH A GAP. THE NARROWER THE GAP, THE MORE THE WAVE IS DIFFRACTED AND IF THE GAP SIZE IS LESS THAN A WAVELENGTH, THE DIFFRACTION IS THROUGH 180˚
IT IS FOUND THAT LIGHT, IF IT PASSES THROUGH A GAP, FANS OUT.THEREFORE, A CONCLUSION CAN BE MADE THAT LIGHT COULD HAVE A WAVE NATURE.
THE DEGREE OF THE FANNING OUT IS RELATED TO THE GAP SIZE AND SINCE THE COLOUR OF LIGHT IS DEPENDANT ON ITS FREQUENCY AND THUS IT'S WAVELENGTH. FOR A GIVEN GAP, RED LIGHT, HAVING THE LONGER WAVELENGTH, WILL BE FANNED OUT THE MOST AND VIOLET, THE LEAST. THIS FUTHER REINFORCES THE IDEA THAT LIGHT HAS A WAVE NATURE.
Interference
WHEN TWO WAVES OVERLAP THEY INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER AND ADD' TOGETHER. WHEN TWO TROUGHS OCCUR TOGETHER AN EXTRA LARGE TROUGH IS PRODUCED. WHERE TWO CRESTS CO-INCIDE AN EXTRA BIG CREST IS PRODUCED. THIS IS CONSTRUCTIVE INTERFERENCE. WHERE THE TROUGH FROM ONE WAVE OCCURS AT THE SAME POINT AS THE CREST FROM THE OTHER, THE TWO WAVES CANCEL ONE ANOTHER OUT AND WE HAVE DESTRUCTIVE INTERFERENCE.
