In my opinion, only God should take life away, but with the emphasis on the word ‘should'. By this, I mean that there are special circumstances in which someone other than God should take a life. The crux of the matter is that life is sacred and the Bible teaches us that taking a life is murder. Some people argue that under no circumstances should somebody take another person's life, whether it is a foetus or an old man in pain. God will decide when he wants that person as it is part of his great plan. Others argue that carrying out euthanasia on somebody they love is an act of kindness and therefore is obeying the commandment ‘Love thy neighbour'. There are many different attitudes towards abortion and euthanasia and I personally have mixed opinions about both of them.
Christians believe that life is a sacred gift from God and that gives them a special quality that no other person has a right to interfere with. This is known as sanctity of life and through Jesus' teachings, we are taught that everyone is special in God's eyes. In Genesis we are told that every person is unique and special, "So God created man in his own image." Christians think that death is as natural as birth is and that God intends when we are born and when we die. In Corinthians 3:16-17, it states that if anyone other than God takes a life, then God will take theirs. "So if anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy, and you yourselves are his temple." This includes doctors aiding people to die or terminating a foetus. They take a Hippocratic oath to preserve a life at the start of their career. Also, Christians question the right to life. Anti-abortion campaigners feel that from the moment of conception, the foetus has a right to live. That potential baby has rights that any other full-grown human being has.
