"Fur In Fashion: Stylish Or Just Sick?"

The fur trade has been a topic of debate for many years but the facts about fur are simple. The industry would like consumers to believe that fur is simply a fabric but in reality it is the skin that has been ripped or peeled off of the animals back and in extreme but frequent cases, when the animal is still alive. For years this industry has tried to justify its actions by claiming that animals were put on this earth to serve man and that it is the right of humans to harvest these animals as we see fit. Furriers believe that "the human race should not be responsible for protecting animals from inhumane treatment, because animals do not have feelings like humans" (Fur Commission 2000). But the truth is animals are not that dissimilar from humans, they can feel pain and most of all they can suffer. Animal rights activist Peter Singer portrays this idea best by saying simply,
"If they can tell the difference between pleasure and pain, they have the fundamental right not to be harmed" (Singer 57). Furthermore, animals killed for their fur are typically killed in the cheapest way possible, which is the most painful way possible. This inhumane treatment is unfair and wrong because today there is no reason to wear fur.

With the many fake fur products that are available today, there is no way to justify the inhumane way these animals are killed. Whether a animal is trapped in the wild or raised on a farm, they are both killed for only one reason, their fur that is only used for vanity. Fur is used to make a fashion statement, not as a necessity for survival. Leather, for example, is the by-product of another industry, which happens to be the multi-million dollar meat industry. Therefore, this business is used for several purposes, one being the necessity of food. Nothing is wasted in this business.
