A Friendly Collision
The third of September in the year 2000 was my last day
working as a rookie lifeguard over the summer. I heard my
locker door slam behind me as I walked out of the bathroom.
I realized that it would be seven months before I heard that
locker door slam again. It would be seven months before I
inhaled the horrid smell of chlorine at six o'clock in the
morning. It would be seven months before I got to see the
co-workers that I considered my brothers and sisters.
Although very saddened, I told everyone that I would try to
keep in touch. Several of them hoped to see me over the
year. My boss promised me that he would get to see me one
way or another during the year, but thinking of it as a
joke, I just laughed.
I stepped out of the church, pulling the sides of my
jacket together to shield myself from the bitter and cold
wind. I ran to the car in hopes that the door would be
unlocked, but to my dismay it was not. My mother finally
approached the car and opened the doors for my sister and I.
Once inside the car, I put the heat on as high as it would
go. My mother had let the car warm up before pulling out
of the parking lot. Once the interior of the car was warm,
my sister and I struck up a conversation about what presents
to give to each other for Christmas. My sister had made a
joke and we were both laughing, but my mother was not. I
turned to look at her. She looked scared and worried. She
suddenly threw her right hand across my chest as if to
protect me from something. As I opened my mouth to question
