"Designers Actually Have More Potential To Slow Environmental Degradation Than Economists, Politicians, Businesses And Even Environmentalists." Discuss.
Education is the most important factor in slowing environmental degradation. The Global Ideas Bank stress that to become a sustainable society, we must change the way we think as swiftly as possible'. Achieving sustainable development demands a complete change in culture and attitudes from every person on the planet, through an understanding of environmental issues. In order to answer the above question, I will need to examine the power structures within society, looking at how this cultural change could be brought about. I will break the question down by looking at each group's influence on society's environmental impact, showing that environmentalists hold the most potential to slow environmental degradation because they are the ones who can provoke the public support vital to achieving it.
Environmentalists
The terms economist', business' and politician' mentioned in the title of this essay essentially refer to professions. Even the term designer' indicates a specific mode of thinking, which is not carried into every aspect of a designer's life. However, the term environmentalist', defined as one working to solve environmental problems, such as pollution' , refers to a mindset affecting every area of life, meaning everyone can become an environmentalist. If everyone valued sustainability, it could be achieved. As this is the definition of slowing environmental degradation to its full potential, the greatest potential to slow environmental degradation lies with environmentalists.
By definition, an environmentalist is already aware of the importance of environmental issues. Environmentalists need to communicate this information to others, so they too can understand how vital it is. Although not directly contributing to slowing environmental degradation, they can provide the public with the vital information crucial to beginning the process.
