A Cross Cultural Model Of Service Delivery In Mental Health

Introduction
The organisational areas that McMHAP workers influenced were areas that required change to ensure the inclusivity of participants' mental health needs (Refer to Diagram 5). The emphasis of McMHAP was to ensure that the mental health service reflected the mental health needs of non English speaking background communities. In order to achieve this the following factors need to be considered.

Policy Development of Mental Health Services
McMHAP had the opportunity to influence SAMHS policies by developing Service Agreements, such as ensuring that funds were allocated towards translating and interpreting services, and Protocols on the relationship of SAMHS and McMHAP workers working in partnership.

McMHAP found that allocating sufficient time was a necessity when working with people from non English speaking background communities. In McMHAP's view there was a requirement for a policy to be developed and implemented on time allocated to work with people of non English speaking background communities.

Promoting information in languages other than English was also required. Ensuring that different means of providing information to non English speaking background communities was crucial. Ethnic media - newspapers and radio - is a mechanism of providing information and promoting mental health services to raise non English speaking background communities. This would raise their awareness of the services provided.

Employing bilingual/bicultural workers may have assisted the service to cater for non English speaking background communities and offer a culturally and linguistically appropriate service. There was also a need for such a policy.

Key Liaison Person(s)
Ensuring that there was a liaison mental health worker within the service assisted with the correct information being disseminated and the program promoted to other service providers.
