A Closer Look

Melissa Foster did a fabulous job with her oral presentation of "The Chimborazo Project: Women and Life at the Base of Chimorazo". Not only did Melissa use beautiful picture slides to show the audience parts of Ecuador, she was able to incorporate the people into the slides to explain some of the different aspects of their culture.
Melissa used a very conversational type of tone to give her presentation. She did not have a manuscript or note cards in front of her, so she was constantly maintaining eye contact. She talked about her experiences and used the slides to explain things to the audience.
While she was going through the slides, she allowed audience members to ask her questions by blurting them out. I found this to be somewhat distracting. Although she had answers to everyone of the questions, I didn't care for that aspect very much. Perhaps, it was more effective because the audience participated actively and were constantly focusing on what she way saying. I find this to be more effective in a classroom type of setting though.
I did enjoy the way she added in several little humorous tid bits and her own personal funny stories to the presentation. They kept people awake and focused. She presented a lot of information without overwhelming the audience. She did it in a very unique sort of way. She gave an extraordinary amount of information pertaining to the region, the people. her work, and her life, but she didn't bore people with uninteresting facts or figures.
She gave previews of what was to come and used smooth transitions to get different points across. She didn't give her points in chronological order. She tended to skip back and forth between different happenings, but it was still rather easy to follow along with.
She tied the people of that region and differing communities, how they related to her, her experiences with them, and how she became best friends...
