A Closer Look At Water Quality Strategies
A solution has been developed to combat the complex water quality problems internationally. This concept ,called "Applied Ecosystems", was coined by the ecologically aware architect Paolo Soleri as a natural way to reuse contaminated water . Many influential architects are instituting this idea into their designs. Water quality affects millions of people worldwide. Every year of the estimated 5,152,600 infections due to water related disease, 11,240 in developing and industrialized countries that do not have access to clean water die because of contaminates. Bacteria, pollution, waste and disease thrive in un-filtered water. Water related diseases include cholera, typhoid, bacillus, hepatitis, dysentery, malaria....the list continues. The chemical pollution that runs-off from industrialized and consumer areas (such as the US) are almost worse then the developing areas that have waste and life-threatening bacteria in their water. Chemical processing that is used in the United States is not always the best answer. This harsh method is not only costly, it also puts new chemicals such as chlorine and lead into the water. Nitrates and nitrites are commonly used in agricultural fertilizers. These un-natural materials can cause brain damage, blue baby syndrome, a decrease in the blood's ability to carry oxygen and death. Radon and lead found in "treated" water can cause similar effects. These chemical treatments eventually poison the fragile water ecosystem. New products are being marketed for household uses that were never designed with sewage treatment plants (or aquatic systems) in mind. In addition to biological wastes, people began to pour all kinds of things down the drain: cans of paint, harsh chemicals to unclog pipes, bleach, paint thinners, nail-polish removers. And the waste itself now carried antibiotics or even estrogen from birth control pills. All these things together cause a highly complex mixture of chemical and biological substances that still go...
