"Board Games"
The Video that we watched called Board Games' covered the history of four board games, Snakes and Ladders, Luedo, Er and Chess. It showed us a variety of ideas that we may like to use when we are in the process of making our board game. As well as showing us the history of board games and ideas, it showed us the different types of dice used over the past in board games whether they are wheels, dice or spinning tops.
Snakes and Ladders originated in India. At the top of the board was a picture of heaven and the aim of the game was to try and travel to heaven without having the go down the snakes. The snakes represented the evil spirits and as you travelled down them you were on your way to the bottom pits. On each of the squares that you land on, there were sayings and deeds. If you landed on a good deed it was supposedly very good for you and if you landed on a bad deed it was very bad.
The Second game was called Luedo. Luedo also originated in India. The Indian used to play it many years ago but instead of using playing pieces they used their servants for amusement. The object of the game was to get your pieces to tone end of the board first. The board was an X type shape and the colours varied. The boards were fabric and were made in beautiful colours and patterns.
Er was the next game we heard about. It originated in Iraq and four thousand years ago. The dice were triangular pyramids that were white. On one point there was a white dot and the rest was black. When you threw the dice you would count how many white dots were face up and that would be your amount of moves. Er was a very popular game back then in Iraq.
Chess once again also originated in India and then was taken under by the Persians. Check Mate', which is the phrase you say when you have won the game is a Persian word meaning King is Dead.' Many say that to play chess you need to be good at mathematics although as soon as one...
