..........And Make Him Blonde
.and make him Blonde
Although I see human genetic engineering as inevitable, I do not support some
aspects of its implementation in the human race. Humans have been manipulating plant
and animal genomes for thousands of years. Domestic plants and animals have come
about due to selective breeding and have served mankind for many millennia (Baker, 3).
Scientists today, in a way, do the same to human beings. Scientists have made minor
adjustments to a person's genome to extract recessive diseases in their genetic makeup.
What if people were created to serve a specific purpose? Much like a cow is used
to just produce milk (Baker, 1), what if a human was manipulated, much like
domestication, to be a perfect soldier. This is a controversial subject that many people
fear around the world. No matter how much I do not like the idea of some human genetic
engineering, human genetic engineering is inevitable. Genetic engineering is basically a
"cut and paste" system. Genetic researchers cut apart the human genome to investigate
what the individual parts do (Baker, 2). In turn, they have learned how to cut out a gene
they do not want and put another in its place.
Genetic engineering is a very important aspect of our society. Biotechnology, or
"biotech", is not a new technology. Scientists have been using it for years. Biotech,
however, is a lot faster and more precise than selective breeding (Baker, 3).
Hormones produced by biotech makes cows produce more milk. This system is a lot
faster than breeding many generations of cow that produce more milk (Baker, 1). In
Japan, they used biotech to manipulate the genome of a watermelon so it would be
