The Oxford English Dictionary defines "civil war" as a war between parties or factions within the same nation. This essay intends to firstly, to explore the reasons as to why these horrific and often disturbing circumstances began in the first place while illustrating more clearly what exactly is happening within the various scenarios encountered. In this analysis the essay will secondly, provide the rationale behind the irrational human behaviour known as civil war, while at the heart of this essay lies the question whether man commits evil as a sane, conscious act and later explaining his actions as momentary lapse of humanity.
To explore the reasons as to why these horrific and often disturbing circumstances began in the first place, various geographical "case studies" shall be used to illustrate the reasons as to how and why the forms of civil war emerged. Politically motivated civil wars will be detailed through examples in history such as within incidents experienced in Germany, Myanmar, Sierra Leone and Angola. Food-related uprisings will be explored in Venezuela and Zimbabwe. Man's inherent need for protection and security will be viewed in terms of gang-related situations on the Cape Flats.
Politically motivated civil wars will be employed as a major reason as to why groups have fought amoungst each other throughout the centuries . Often minority groups feel that they are constantly on the receiving end of a brutal government and the only way to express their anger and dissatisfaction with the State is to engage violently with State supporters. This was clearly evident in Germany in 1923 whereby Adolph Hitler organised unemployed men and youths into the Sturmabteilung, which was used...
